Student Bank Account

The ins and outs of opening a Dutch bank account.

Opening a Dutch bank account will make your life much easier, from paying rent to using iDEAL for everyday purchases.

From the moment you arrive in the Netherlands, your home country’s bank account may not be enough for every situation. Dutch debit cards are the most common way to pay in shops, supermarkets, cafés, and restaurants. Credit cards and some foreign bank cards may not be accepted everywhere, and many online payments use iDEAL, which is linked to Dutch bank accounts. Opening a Dutch bank account can therefore make everyday payments easier, and in some cases may be necessary.

Why you need a Dutch bank account?

While you can survive with a foreign account, a Dutch account is highly recommended because:

  • iDEAL/Wero payments are used almost everywhere (online shopping, tickets, etc.)
  • Many employers prefer paying salaries to a Dutch IBAN
  • Some services (like gyms or subscriptions) require a local account
  • Easier rent payments

What documents you need to open a bank account?

Most banks ask for:

  • Valid passport or EU ID card
  • BSN (Burger Service Number)
  • Tenancy agreement
  • Residence permit (for non-EU students)

Tip: Some digital banks let you open an account without a BSN initially, but you’ll need to add it later.

What are the options?

There are two main types of banks available, each suited to different needs and situations.

Option 1: Traditional bank

Traditional banks are a popular choice for students who are staying in the Netherlands for a longer period.

  • Setup can take a few days

Option 2: Digital bank

Digital banks are a flexible and reliable option, especially when you’ve just arrived.
Benefits
  • Open an account in minutes from your phone
  • Immediate access to payments and a virtual card
  • Sometimes possible to start without a BSN
Keep in mind:
  • Some features may require a paid plan
